Paso del Norte Health Foundation receives $285K for Diabetes Management and Prevention

May 7, 2026

A new $285,000 investment awarded to the Paso del Norte Health Foundation by Texas Mutual and its affiliate Texicare will expand diabetes prevention and management efforts across El Paso County.

The funding will be used to strengthen early detection, education, and ongoing care for individuals living with diabetes. The investment comes as 15.3 percent of adults in El Paso County are living with the condition, a higher rate than state and national levels. Research also shows that risk is even higher in rural communities, where access to care and education can be limited.

To address these challenges, the Health Foundation will partner with the following local nonprofit organizations to expand programs that deliver direct services for high-risk populations:

  • The Texas A&M Colonias Program will expand outreach through community health workers, increasing access to screening and education in rural and underserved areas.
  • The El Paso Center for Diabetes will provide individualized nutrition counseling for women with gestational diabetes to support healthier pregnancies and long-term outcomes.
  • Project Amistad will offer tailored education for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping participants better manage their health.
  • Project Vida will implement evidence-based prevention programs that promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
  • The Diabetes Alliance and El Paso Center for Diabetes will collaborate to create bilingual educational videos to increase access to reliable information for both patients and providers.
  • Funds provided by Texas Mutual and Texicare will also be partially invested in professional development for healthcare teams to deliver more effective, coordinated care through the annual diabetes conference, Faces of Diabetes.

“Support from partners like Texicare and Texas Mutual allows us to direct resources to organizations doing the difficult, hands-on work of diabetes prevention and education,” said Tracy Yellen, CEO of PdNHF. “From community health workers in the colonias to programs serving individuals with disabilities, we are grateful to leverage this investment to further empower our grantees.”

This funding is part of a $1 million investment in health care philanthropy grants to four organizations in strategic regions of the state. These grants support programs that enhance the health and wellness of working Texans and their families.

“At Texas Mutual, we believe strong communities start with access to quality, affordable health care,” said Jeanette Ward, president and CEO of Texas Mutual. “Through investments like this one with Paso del Norte Health Foundation, we support organizations that are deeply rooted in their communities and focused on delivering practical, lasting solutions. Together, we are helping more working Texans and their families live healthier, more secure lives.”
