Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes Online Course

June 20, 2022

Often, we hear people with diabetes have limited access to a dietitian or a healthcare professional who can walk them through the basics of understanding how to manage their diabetes. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has developed a low-cost online course for people who may need to manage their diabetes on their own schedule.

The Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes online course is a self-paced course which allows clients the opportunity to learn at their own pace, when and where they have time to focus on their condition. The course is available for one year at a one-time fee of $30, which makes it easier for participants to access and have the freedom to learn about their disease for less than a one-time co-pay.

The online course is designed to build skills a person with diabetes needs to understand as well as how to prevent or delay complications associated with type 2 diabetes. Modules focus on the basics of diabetes, how food affects blood glucose, carbohydrate management, self-care practices of blood glucose monitoring, medication, and the importance of physical activity. Interactive activities allow participants to have real-time problem solving to support decisions about their condition. Participants may only advance to the next module once the current module has been completed. This allows for participants to build skills outlined by the framework for optimal self-management behaviors from the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.

“We are excited to partner with the Paso del Norte Health Foundation to offer resources to individuals with diabetes,” says Danielle D. Krueger, AgriLife Extension program specialist. “Texas A&M AgriLife works to impact the quality of life for all Texans through a variety of classes for adults in managing their health.”

Being successful in managing diabetes starts with knowing the basics of self-care and learning how to incorporate foods into everyday meals. This course allows participants the opportunity and freedom to take charge of their health with the support of evidence-based information and best practices. Course information is updated annually based on the practice guidelines outline in the American Diabetes Association, Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes.
