Dr. Michael Kelly, Vice President of Programs for the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, was featured in the June edition of The City Magazine for his work on the Health Foundation’s diabetes prevention and management initiative. Health Foundation awards new grants for Healthy Eating Initiative

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded 15 grants totaling more than $2.4 million under the Healthy Living priority area. These grants will support nutritious meals, physical activity, home gardens, training for teachers, and cooking education programs that help children and adults in the border region live healthier lives.

To provide nutritious meals and nutrition education to 100 children five days a week in Rancho Anapra and Lomas de Poleo in Ciudad Juárez, MX.

Carnival fun along the Playa Drain Trail

Families recently gathered along the Playa Drain Trail by Mimosa Avenue and Balsam Drive to enjoy some Carnival-themed fun.

Several booths were set up along the trail with food and fun activities such as corn hole, ring toss, horseshoe, mystery fishing, and a photo booth. Clowns entertained children with balloon shaping and magic. The event is part of an overall approach to making residents aware of the trail and the benefits it can have on one’s health.

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recognized 20 REALIZE Executive leaders at a special graduation ceremony this month at 150 Sunset. The group of 20 community leaders became transformational leaders as they completed the 8-month leadership development program that included a customized 360 performance evaluation, executive coaching around personalized leadership goals, two off-site leadership development experiences, six day-long learning sessions, and more.

Kids prepare healthy snacks after school

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, and variety is as important as quantity. Recently, Desert Spoon Food Hub shared a healthy snack of fruits and vegetables with kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso in their afterschool program. Kids mixed apples, tangerines, berries, honey, and mint for a tasty and healthy dish that is easy to recreate at home. Students work together to build their school garden

Monte Vista Elementary School in Las Cruces has a new school garden thanks to the help of La Semilla Food Center. Students of all grades put on their gardening gloves and participated in shoveling, raking, and using a wheel barrel to fill beds with soil. They learned to create irrigation pods and planted herbs, flowers, and trees. For their hard work, students took turns on a bike blender, making watermelon smoothies as a refreshment for all.
