Diabetes resources available in rural communities

February 23, 2023

Diabetes has no boundaries when it comes to the illness, yet access to information and services can present a challenge depending on where you live.

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation has partnered with Texas A&M University Colonias Program and their Project VyBE to help address diabetes at the community level by increasing self-sufficiency and enhancing the quality of life of residents in hard-to-reach areas throughout the region.

Project VyBE trains regional certified community health workers as diabetes education coaches and works to establish relationships with individuals wanting to improve their diabetic condition or prevent the onset of the disease. Emphasis is on health and resource navigation to local providers for ongoing care, thereby increasing health literacy and overall health status. Project staff build upon establishing relationships to promote early detection of diabetes symptoms and offer awareness and education through friendly, non-intimidating “Talks” in group settings to those in need.

Volunteers are also trained to lead support groups that contributes to ongoing peer sharing, learning, and support. Groups work with project staff to develop topics related to meal planning, stress reduction, resources, and guest speakers.

Currently, Project VyBE has certified 20 community health workers and has reached more than 300 individuals with diabetes support or referrals.

Screenings and Glucose Checks are offered at no cost.
