Sabrosa Vida’s Monthly Recipe

Sabrosa Vida is a free chef-led cooking and nutritional educational program funded by the Health Foundation in partnership with the El Paso Center for Diabetes.

New partnership helps screen dental patients for diabetes

With funding from the Health Foundation, the Hunt School of Dental Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC-El Paso) is screening patients for diabetes at the TTUHSC-El Paso Oral Health Clinic.

The program engages dental students, TTUHSC-El Paso faculty, and community health workers to assess a patient’s risk for diabetes and, if the patient is at risk, navigate them to a primary care provider. In El Paso, the prevalence of diabetes outpaces the national numbers, with an estimated 15.3 percent of adults, or about 94,000 people, living with diabetes.

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded 10 grants totaling more than $1.3 million under the Disease Prevention & Management priority area and Diabetes initiative. The Health Foundation works in partnership with organizations to implement initiatives and programs for diabetes prevention, early detection, and management in the region.
