Trails and connected walking and biking infrastructure make it easier for residents to be physically active in their everyday lives. Regular physical activity supports health at every age, reducing the risk of chronic disease while also improving brain health, easing anxiety and depression, and promoting better sleep.

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation has played a leading role in advancing trail development. The Foundation constructed the Playa Drain Trail, connecting Ascarate Park to River Park, and led the Paso del Norte Trail Master Plan in 2018. Building on that work, the Foundation continues to collaborate with regional partners to develop the 70-mile Paso del Norte Trail. As of 2025, 20 miles of the trail are complete, with an additional 31 miles funded for design and construction.
