Health Foundation awards 10 grants totaling more than $1.3M under Diabetes Initiative

In El Paso, the prevalence of diabetes outpaces the national numbers, with an estimated 15.3 percent of adults, or about 94,000 people, living with diabetes.

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation recently awarded 10 grants totaling more than $1.3 million under the Disease Prevention & Management priority area and Diabetes initiative. The Health Foundation works in partnership with organizations to implement initiatives and programs for diabetes prevention, early detection, and management in the region.

To provide Diabetes education targeting prediabetes and type 2 diabetes patients to 60 people in Ciudad Juárez, MX.

El Paso Diabetes Association, Inc. - $163,440.56
2023-2024 Diabetes Education and Kids Camp
To graduate 1,000 people from Diabetes Self-Management Education, 500 from Medical Nutrition Therapy, and enroll 60 children for a diabetes camp in El Paso, TX.

2023-2024 “Now What?” Diabetes Awareness and Advocacy Campaign
To create strategies and communication materials to promote the Diabetes “Now What?” media campaign and contribute to developing the Diabetes Alliance across the Paso del Norte region.

NMSU National Diabetes Prevention Program
To provide the National Diabetes Prevention Program via distance learning to 50 residents in Doña Ana, Luna, and Otero counties in southern New Mexico. of Alamogordo, Chaparral, Tularosa, Doña Ana County, and other southern New Mexico communities.

On the Road to Living Well with Diabetes (OTR)
To enroll 125 participants into On the Road to Living Well with Diabetes from Anthony, Las Cruces, Sunland Park, and Chaparral, New Mexico.

Diabetes Prevention Program
To provide a CDC-Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to 60 participants and pilot the depression PHQ9 screening tool for DPP participants in El Paso, TX.

Texas Tech Foundation, Inc. - $166,989.90
Engaging Community Dentists to Screen for and provide Diabetes Education
To collaborate, pilot test, and launch a diabetes screening and referral program with three community dentists for 600 patients over a two-year period in El Paso, TX.

The University of Texas at El Paso - $53,529.30
UTEP Diabetes Awareness Training Program for Community Outreach
To train and supervise 50 students to deliver the Diabetes Awareness Training Program for Community Outreach to 720 individuals across the Paso del Norte region.

Ongoing Technical Assistance Documentation and Evaluation of Regional Diabetes Initiatives
To provide technical assistance and evaluate the diabetes media campaigns.

The University of Texas at El Paso - $163,219.50
UTEP BBRC CHW Led Diabetes Intervention
To deliver On the Road with Diabetes to 900 participants across the Paso del Norte region.
